Nonprofits Using Flickr

Nonprofits can use photo-sharing site Flickr in a variety of ways to raise awareness, launch campaigns, or show nontraditional sides to their organizations. Beth Kanter wrote a post how 10 nonprofits used Flickr in unique ways. Here are some examples we’ve selected that could inspire you.

  • The Indianapolis Museum of Art started a group on Flickr to encourage visitors to submit pictures they took there. Hundreds of pictures later, visitors feel like they contributed to the museum.
  • The ONE campaign asked people to support them by signing a photo petition called Faces of ONE. Thousands of users submitted pictures of their faces and signed their names to demonstrate to officials they want to see action by their governments to end poverty.
  • Youth Service America asked participants in last year’s National & Global Youth Service Day to post pictures of their service projects to their Flickr group. They had over 100 members upload over 1,000 pictures.
  • Flickr can also be a great way to teach, too. Posting screenshots with captions and instructions like Kanter did here to demonstrate how to accomplish tasks is a fast and easy way to both learn and create guides out to teach others.
