How to Avoid Phone Spam
Got Spam? Now you can have SPIT too. Email-based scams are crossing over to the telephone. Known as spam over Internet telephony (SPIT), SearchSecurity.com's article Phone Phishing: The Role of VoIP in Phishing Attacks explains how scammers are employing voice-over-IP technology and a variety of methods to lure people into divulging information over the telephone.
What can you and your org do to keep from getting taken? The rules are similar to those for avoiding spam. Hang up the phone if you get an unsolicited phone call asking for pin numbers, credit card expiry dates, CVV, or other sensitive info. If you get a dubious email or voicemail asking you to call a phone number to clear up some issues with a financial account, be suspicious and delete it. If you want to confirm, call your financial institution with a phone number that you know is legitimate and inquire about your account.
Have you or your organization experienced phone phishing attacks? Let others how you dealt with it in our community forums.
