Microsoft Ends Sales of Windows XP

As of June 30, Windows XP is no longer available through normal channels, though Microsoft has made exceptions for certain PC manufacturers. A new page at the Microsoft Web site addresses several questions and concerns about the future of Windows XP and provides information for users interested in upgrading to Windows Vista.

Many people have been wondering what the news means for organizations that rely on TechSoup Stock for Microsoft products. The short answer is that Windows XP donations are still available. Even if Microsoft discontinues donations of Windows XP, organizations will still be able to use Software Assurance to downgrade from a donated copy of Windows Vista to Windows XP.

Of course, this might be a great time to ask yourself if your organization is ready for the move to Vista: even some hardened critics are giving the operating system another chance. If your organization qualifies for Microsoft donations, you can upgrade to Windows Vista for an admin fee of $10. TechSoup has compiled a great list of resources for organizations considering an upgrade.
