Beware of Creative Directors

Here at TechSoup, we want to help you tell your organization's story in a creative, compelling way. Product donations like Microsoft Expression Design (new to TechSoup), Adobe Creative Suite, and Flickr help your organization find creative, compelling ways to broadcast your message. But can artistic design ever get in the way of an organization's goals?

Jeff Brooks of Donor Power Blog delivers a scathing review of a recent World Food Programme advertisement. The ad is visually compelling — complete with white-on-black lettering, a catchy slogan, and a celebrity — but, according to Jeff, lacks a clear message. There's no invitation for the reader to participate. You may agree or disagree with Jeff's estimation of the ad, but his point remains: a clear message to your audience is more important than an impressive design.

While you're there, be sure to add Jeff's blog to your RSS reader. His funny, intelligent commentary reminds nonprofits not to take donors for granted.
