Join Us for the 2009 International Computer Refurbisher Summit

GreenTech LogoTechSoup is hosting upcoming 6th Annual International Computer Refurbisher Summit (ICRS 2009). This year's summit will be held in Miami Beach, Florida on October 14 and 15 with the theme of "Prospering in Recessionary Times."

ICRS is one of the lesser-known events in the electronics recycling industry. Most electronics recyclers do some amount of whole-system or parts reclamation, but this is the place where people who focus on electronics reuse get together to talk shop every year. It's the best opportunity to meet people and form relationships with refurbishers and asset recovery managers, coordinate efforts, and to get some clarity on issues from a reuse perspective.

TechSoup has been active in the computer reuse field since 2002 when we formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft to administer the Community Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher Program. TechSoup has done a number of things since that time to help organize and further the electronics reuse field including hosting this conference each year.

This series of computer refurbishers conferences have been held in rotating cities around the U.S. and Canada over the past six years, providing an opportunity for people working in the computer reuse and recycling field to learn new techniques for automating data destruction and software installation, to debating industry standards as they apply to reuse. The events have drawn an international crowd and so it offers a global view of the electronics reuse field in regards to computer and mobile phone import and export.

This year's conference will feature Lou August of Wilderness Technology Alliance who will be talking about his work with the Obama administration and the District of Columbia to create a national pilot "Technology Green-Jobs Training Center." In addition, Pat Furr of Computers for Classrooms will be conducting an in-depth session on automating refurbishment programs by using Clonezilla and Sysprep. Will Cade of PC Rebuilders and Recyclers in Chicago will be presenting on the new purge data sanitation technology. Microsoft is the primary sponsor for this event.

ICRS is probably the best single place for people across the globe interested in computer refurbishment, repair, and digital inclusion to meet each other and find out the latest on how this industry impacts the environment and society.
