Software Donations Aid Center for Visually Impaired
The Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI) provides innovative rehabilitation services for youth and adults with visual impairments or blindness. CVI's mission is to empower people impacted by vision loss to live with independence and dignity.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, CVI serves more than 5,500 people a year. It operates with a full-time staff of 50, many of whom are visually impaired themselves, and about 330 volunteers. One of CVI's programs helps clients learn computing skills despite their vision loss.
CVI uses donated Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat software in conjunction with JAWS, a screen-reading software for the visually impaired. After completing the program, 60 to 70 percent of CVI's graduates get jobs, a significantly higher percentage than the national average for visually impaired people of 43.3 percent.
