Save the Children's mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children, and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. In Romania, the organization has helped more than 950,000 children be included in educational programs, protection, and social and medical assistance programs.
Technology plays a major role within the organization in its day-to-day work in the office, enhancing activities such as communication, visual asset creation, and collaborative work. Staff's activities are based upon the ideas that multimedia and social networking can also be informative and resourceful.
Save the Children Romania acquired 16 Office 2007 Standard licenses for its We Grow Up Together program, developed for children left at home alone as a result of their parents' economic migration.
"Indeed, helped by the TechSoup donations system, we saved a lot of money that we used for buying the other technical equipment/services (computers and Internet) needed for the communication between children and their parents abroad," said Ovidiu Majina, the project coordinator. He added that 85 percent of the children improved their classroom behavior and social skills as a consequence of, among other things, the constant and strong connection with their parents.
Moreover, the organization acquired some Windows licenses. This helped it to install proper and safe software at four orphanages. The new software helped to support a campaign that raised awareness among youth in those facilities regarding online dangers and how to use technology in a safe and responsible way.
