Helping the Luciano Barreto Junior Institute Empower At-Risk Youth

In Brazil's smallest state, Sergipe, sugarcane is king. That makes finding opportunities for youth advancement beyond the sugarcane economy almost impossible. One notable exception is the Luciano Barreto Junior Institute (LBJI), which has provided educational opportunities to over 6,000 Sergipe youth. LBJI offers computer education classes to at-risk youth, preparing them to enter the workforce and become engaged citizens. Juliane Balbino, a former LBJI participant, says,"It made all the difference to me and opened many doors."

Through TechSoup Global Network partner Associaso Telecentro de Informaso e Negocios (ATN), LBJI received Microsoft donations that increased productivity. With the money LBJI saved, it purchased hardware. Now there's a computer for every LBJI student.
