Software Donations Create Job Opportunities for Visually Impaired in India

Muncherjee Nowrojee Banajee Industrial Home for the Blind (MNBIH) is a vocational training center for the people with visual impairments located in Mumbai, India. Preparing the visually impaired to compete in the labor market with sighted individuals requires the right technological tools. A donation of Microsoft Windows and Office software through the BigTech program of the NASSCOM Foundation, a member of the TechSoup Global Network, helped the organization provide advanced computer training to 38 visually impaired individuals. The donation's compatibility with JAWS software, a screen-reading program made for people with visual impairments, had a great impact on the people who sought training at the nonprofit. The program has clearly made a difference — a number of graduates passed the civil service exam that qualifies them for government jobs and others ended up on the short list for a position with Tata Consultancy Services, an information technology services company.
