South Michigan Community Services Expanded with IT Donations

South County Community Services is a nonprofit that is focused on strengthening its local community. Serving nine local townships and villages, it is the only human services agencyworking in South Kalamazoo County, Michigan. SCCS provides a place for locals to receive emergency assistance.

People in need can get necessary items such as food, shampoo, laundry service, and cash. SCCS also plans events for the whole community. By opening its doors to the community, SCCS's building is always full of people. Relying heavily on a robust volunteer program, the organization brings people together to improve the quality of life in the community.

The organization also coordinates many programs to promote community involvement. Its program for adults with disabilities offers social and recreational opportunities; participants get together for activities like bingo, potlucks, exercise, and trips to events like baseball games.

SCCS also provides a variety of senior programming such as fitness and exercise, to provide older people a safe social and interactive environment. Its youth summer recreation program offers six weeks of fun for local children. The program is free for low-income families. The organization also provides backpacks and school supplies for local kids in need

In 2007, SCCS had only two computers with very basic software. Through TechSoup, it has been able to upgrade its IT systems with refurbished computers and software donations, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Intuit QuickBooks, Windows 7, and Windows Vista. Withnew technology, it was able to reach populations via the Internet that it couldn't reach before.
