Scholarships for Street Kids

Software Donations Support Scholarships for Street Children in Myanmar

Scholarships for Street Kids (S4SK) is a small organization that uses its modest funds to provide impoverished children in developing countries with educational opportunities. It funds informal classes for children out of school, private tuition for children in their matriculation year, vocational training, and scholarships for higher education at local colleges. Presently S4SK works in Southeast Asia, with a focus on Myanmar. The organization is managed by a small group of Quakers from Keighley in West Yorkshire, U.K.

While the organization is operating on a very small scale, its work directly benefits the poorest of the poor. For example, the first grants were to two boys in an orphanage. One worked in a candle factory; the other was unemployed. Both were interested in music. S4SK bought instruments for them and enrolled them in Music College. Both did graduate, with awards for excellence in performance.

S4SK received many Microsoft donations from Charity Digital Exchange, the IT donation program of Charity Digital, a TechSoup Global Network partner. The charity is also looking to transfer its website to Expression Web 3 to give it a more professional, stable, and reliable environment. Although it is a small organization, some of its projects are quite complex, and the Visio donation improved the organization's planning process.
